Eyelash Extension Aftercare

Hands up who watched #loveisland and witnessed this last week? Dani Dyer blow-drying her lashes. Who didn't bat an eyelid full of fluffy extensions??

I get it. I don't recommend it, but I get it. She's got her beautiful extensions wet and wants them dry and fluffy again. Didn't even cross my mind that there'd be a media storm of this crazy little beauty hack. "Brushing her lashes with a mini toothbrush" one paper reported. SERIOUSLY!! It'd be the cutest little toothbrush I've ever seen.

Then it dawned on me, there must actually be people who don't even know what eyelash extensions are. The poor souls. So guy lashes is a relatively new treatment for the male population, fine, but there are actually girls sat there going WTF??

They'll have no idea just how precious these teeny tiny strands of hair are to us lash lovers. They'll have no idea what a lash nap is, how we have trained ourselves to lie perfectly still for hours at a time, and they'll certainly have no idea of the maintenance involved in protecting our investment. I feel sad for them but remain hopeful that one day they'll join the revolution.

While I absolutely DO NOT recommend blow drying your lashes by the way, I would be lying if I said I hadn't done this *cough* once!

So before this becomes "a thing" here's some correct after care advice to ensure you keep your fans fluffy, your lashes healthy and clean, but most importantly help them last.

DONT'S

  • Do not blow-dry your lashes. Even if it's just been endorsed by some minor celebrity, it's not good. Heat can damage your actual eyes and will most certainly play havoc with the glue, meaning your extensions will fall out early. We personally don't even recommend the cold setting, but if you're going to become a Dyer dryer, then it MUST be cold!

  • Do not not get them wet in the first 24 hours. Steam, sweat, rain, showers it might affect initial bonding so go careful when you open that oven!!

  • Do not visit steam rooms, saunas, sun beds within the first 48 hours, the heat can affect the bond, so that additional me time will have to wait.

  • Do not perm eyelashes while wearing extensions, or use mechanical eyelash curlers. Yes we have to say this as some numpty has tried. If you want them curlier speak to us, we may be able to do that at your next infill.

  • Do not use wet wipes or face wipes to clean your eyes. These wipes contain small fibres that can get stuck in your extensions. Use the brush we give you at your first appointment, with baby shampoo or lash foam.

  • Don't put mascara on them. Even eyelash extension mascara will close those fans, but if you really really have to, make sure it is one designed for extensions.

  • Don't try and fool us by saying you haven't worn mascara when you have, your lash tech WILL know and will just smirk while she attempts to scrub off every last bit of residue while your nose grows longer.

  • Do not pick your extensions. Not ever. If your natural lashes are pulled out prematurely too often it can cause lash aloepecia. Fact.

DEFINITELY DO

  • Clean your lashes daily. Use the brush we give you at your first full set with baby shampoo or foam cleanser.

  • Avoid eye make-up, especially oil based pencils and eye shadows, when possible.

  • Brush your lashes morning, noon and night. Especially if you have Russian volume, this will mean your fans stay open and fluffy.

  • Book an infill appointment no longer than every three weeks. Your naturally lashes shed every two to three weeks, so your extensions will shed too. Regular infills will keep them looking their best and will save you having to book another full set.

  • Be gentle around your eye area. Avoid rubbing and touching excessively.

  • If you use lash extension mascara clean it ALL off before your infill. Dirty lashes still laced with make-up residue will eat into your treatment time meaning less lashes applied. Sad times.

  • Check the ingredients of products you use near your eyes. Some eye drops contain oils so if you're a hay-fever sufferer you may find you need fortnightly infills while the pollen count is high.

  • Contact us if you have concerns, questions or think you won't last until your three week infill. Infills require roughly 50% of the extensions to remain before a new set is required.

  • Oh and it goes without saying really, but bat those lashes where ever you go.
